Have you ever read any Edgar Allan Poe? Written in 1850.
“The Pit and the Pendulum” by Edgar Allan Poe is a suspenseful story about a man sentenced to death during the Spanish Inquisition. Imprisoned in a dark, dungeon-like cell, he faces a series of terrifying tortures designed to break his sanity — first a deep pit meant to trap him, then a razor-sharp pendulum that swings lower and lower toward his body. Just as he’s about to be killed, he’s dramatically rescued by French soldiers who storm the prison, ending his ordeal at the last moment. The story explores fear, time, and the human will to survive.
